Description

What is Basic Training?

Basic Training is an 8 hour course that will enable you to become a state sponsored Peer Mentor with the Military Veteran Peer Network (MVPN). Training is designed to provide volunteers with frontline intervention tools to address the immediate basic needs of individual service members, veterans and their families.

  • Phase I: Training is focused on how to be a Peer Mentor and resources available to assist veterans. The class covers: Peer Support Fundamentals, Military Culture, Suicide Awareness, Peer Ethics, and Support Opportunities. (9:00am - 12:00pm)

  • Lunch Provided

  • Phase II: Training is focused on challenges the veteran (mentee) may face and how as a mentor to identify the challenge, resources available to assist him or her. Topics include: Depression Awareness, Addictive behaviors, Stress Management, and the MVPN SMART Tool. (1:00pm – 4:00pm)

Peer Support Positions Include:

· Peer Mentor

· Peer Group Leader

· Hiking Group Leader

· Peer Court Mentor (Veterans Court)

· TDCJ Volunteer for Veterans

· Community Outreach

The Veteran Services department of Tri-County continuosly strives to enhance access to services for Veterans in Montgomery, Walker, and Liberty Counties with support from the Texas Veterans Commission’s Military Veteran Peer Network (http://www.tvc.state.tx.us/Military-Veteran-Peer-Network.aspx). The program was created to improve access to mental health services, but over the years it has evolved with connecting Veterans to all services.

How we accomplish this is limitless. We are constantly striving to make a collective impact within the community to bring everyone together, especially Veteran service organizations who are all trying to do the same thing, serve Veterans. The awesome thing is, this program is not only here in my area, we are scattered throughout the state all attached to our Local Mental Health Authorities. (Click here: MVPN Coordinator Map)

 

Our main focus is in the following areas:

Peer Mentorship Training and support (through the TVC’s MVPN)

PTSD support groups using the BEITZ curriculum (http://bringeveryoneinthezone.org/index.html)

Veteran Treatment Court Mentor Programs

American Legion & VFW Support

Creation and Implementation of the Veterans Taskforce

Hiring Events and Benefits Fairs

Social Events

Gulf Coast area regional support with MVPN Counterparts
